ONGOING:
The Ingrid education centre is a self built and volunteer staffed school located in the very needy area of Kayole. Douglas M Onkware set out to try to bring a school to improve the local childrens education. In 2006. He, along with a like minded group of backers, began with some tin sheets, wood and will power.
Since that time the school has grown, more so with a graduation of 22 pupils , an xmas party, two new tin and wood classrooms, two extra school helpers and much more being donated and administered by K.A.A.O.
From 11th March to 11th April 09 an appeal for 20 desks and 20 benches was made under the heading of "Wing and a prayer."
The aim : To furnish the two classrooms which have waiting pupils.
A set of one desk and one bench costs around £22 GBP
Update:11th April 09: The appeal raised enough funds to build and install all 20 desks. These were presented to the school on this date. Several donors including a prominent politician made additional cash donations. This was a wonderful result for KAAO and the school.
Volunteers were in attendance and much thanks to Lucy,Adelaide,
abdalla and others who contributed so much time and effort.
The Lady of Mercy Mombasa have now grown the 50 chicks that were
presented by Kenya aid appeals. Those may now be sold off for unit funds. Our aim is to raise a working stock of 300 chicks by August 09. This figure will bring them a source of food as well as empowerment and self help. This is a very popular project with the children.
Update 21 JUNE09: Another great success. All chickens were sold to market at profit and phase two will begin begin as funds become available. Meanwhile Kaao raised funds to get medical aid to Yusuf a 15yr old street orphan who Madam Fatuma had taken into care. Yusuf had TB and a stomach full of liquid. The funds raised enabled swift medical treatment which removed the liquid and enabled immediate medication to take place. The patient is now "home" and three volunteer doctors are following up his care for free. A clothes appeal raised several donors of good quality clothing and toys. These were given over to the children on 14th June 09.
The Wakesho Institute Mombasa has now progressed with their dress making, hairdressing, hand crafts and dance display group. We have supplied two batches of cloth over the last weeks and this has been turned into saleable merchandise,
We are trying to raise at least 10 working sewing machines, cloths, threads, and any hair and barbers materials and trade tools.
Update June 21 09: We are not at present in a position to add further materials or much else untill the spotlight fortnight which will follow around 17/18th May 09. A focus will be placed on more material and ongoing call for sewing machines and other craft tools and machines.
Nakuru is in focus and totally new. We are planning for a major 3 month excercise from may untill july 09 in conjunction with an overseas voluntary organization. The project is very large and will begin with three main aims:
STAGE ONE: The raising of food stocks and a food program for the two schools. This will run until end June 09as main focus item.
STAGE TWO: July will be focused on raising rent and school teachers pay. For months these teachers have been giving their services, skills and time for free, Obviously they have family and need to pay bills as do we all. It is right and proper they collect a regular wage for the important work they are doing. Rental is also important to ensure stability and to create a long term plan for the use of the rented land.
STAGE THREE: August month we intend to get as many volunteers into the area as we can to repair old property and fittings, to clean up the area and to extend the skills empowerment program.
The planning stage is done and the spotlight falls on Nakuru with effect 1 JUNE 09. We are looking for local volunteers who can liase with our admins to bring in the changes we have proposed.
